How it works

  1. 1

    Export and upload

Export your statements from your broker, as the CSV or Excel file it gives you, and upload them as they are.

  2. 2

    We check your data

Five checks on every statement, with a preview of each trade we read.

  3. 3

    Review any gaps

If something is missing or wrong, we say exactly what. Fix the file, or add the missing statements, and check again.

  4. 4

    Calculate

Enter losses carried forward. Every financial year in your statements is worked out.

  5. 5

    Download your results

Tables, charts and a report for every year, with every figure traceable.

Why CGTDesk

From your broker's export to organised data and an estimate, for Australian share and option traders.

Options CGT

Options are included, not an afterthought

Options follow their own CGT events, and an exercised option changes the cost of the shares behind it. CGTDesk works each case out using the ATO's treatment for investors, and shows the working.

  • Options you bought

Sold back or left to expire: a CGT event C2. An expired option is a loss of its remaining cost.

  • Options you wrote

The premium is a CGT event D2, counted in the year you wrote it. Buying it back is a separate C2.

  • Options that were exercised

No separate option gain: the premium moves onto the share trade, at the RBA rate of its own day.

Two option treatments are open questions we flag for your tax agent rather than decide silently. See the sources.

Calculations, not personalised tax advice. CGTDesk is not a registered tax agent and does not prepare or lodge tax returns. Review your records and results before use, and seek advice from a registered tax agent if needed.

Why you can trust the number

  • Every sale is matched to the oldest shares first

Each purchase is a parcel. A sale uses parcels in order, and parcels held more than 12 months get the discount.

  • Nothing is calculated until your data checks out

Gaps, duplicates and mismatches stop the calculation and tell you what to fix.

  • Built on ATO guidance and the tax law

The method follows the ATO's CGT guidance and the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, including options. See the sources.

  • Every figure links to a report you can download

Open any year to see each disposal: date sold, date bought, proceeds, cost base and gain.

A sale of 130 shares on 12 March 2025

Example

The sale takes the oldest parcels first, then the next.

Estimated gain $1,450.00, discount applied $725.00

Up to 500 transactions$20.00
501 to 2,000 transactions$30.00

Each paid year includes:

  • Your capital gains and losses, with every sale and its cost base
  • Option trades, bought, written and exercised
  • The year’s report as a PDF
  • Your cleaned trades as a CSV

A year is paid for once, for the person named on the statements. Fixing your data and recalculating a year you have paid for costs nothing more. No refund once a year is unlocked, because the calculation is done; this does not limit your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Prices are in Australian dollars. No GST is charged. Payments are handled by Stripe, so we never see your card.
